What is a 'disabled person's permit'?

In Sweden, there are special parking spaces reserved for people with disabilities. These spaces are designed to facilitate parking and access to different locations for people who have difficulty walking or moving over short distances. 

A parking permit for disabled persons can be issued both to disabled persons who drive motor vehicles themselves and to other disabled persons who regularly need assistance from the driver outside the vehicle.

Who can get a disabled parking permit?

It is the municipalities that assess the application and issue any parking permits for disabled people. A permit may only be issued to a disabled person who has a permanent disability which means that he or she has significant difficulties in moving around independently. The Swedish Transport Agency considers that the assessment of whether a person with reduced mobility, who does not drive a motor vehicle, regularly needs help from the driver outside the vehicle should be based on the applicant's ability to wait alone for the driver at the destination.

How to optimize the parking area for people with disabilities

Accessible parking is an important part of an inclusive society. By creating adapted parking spaces, managers of a parking area can contribute to a more accessible and safe parking environment for all. In particular, consider the following points:

Clear signage and markings

Ensure that parking spaces are clearly marked, and that special signs indicating that the spaces are reserved for people with disabilities are posted.

Size and design

Parking spaces for people with disabilities are usually wider to provide extra space for wheelchairs and other assistive devices. In addition, the surface under and around the parking space is usually smooth to facilitate wheelchair movement.

Proper placement

Parking spaces for disabled people are usually strategically located near the entrance to the building. This makes it easier for them to get in and out of their vehicles and to reach their destinations.
